Dental implants are one of the best tooth replacement procedures that will make you feel more confident about your smile. An implant becomes a permanent part of your mouth and can last for years and maybe even a lifetime.

However, you must follow the proper implant care routine in order to reap the full benefits of your implants and increase their longevity.
The responsibility to care for your implants starts the minute you leave your dentist’s office.

Here is everything you need to know about dental implant care.

Use a Soft Brush

You will probably need to change your toothbrush once you’ve gotten your implants. Invest in a good and gentle nylon toothbrush with soft bristles to brush your teeth. It is best to avoid toothbrushes with hard bristles since they can scratch the surface of your implants.

Floss Regularly

Flossing is a critical part of your oral hygiene routine. If you didn’t floss before your implants, now would be a good time to change this habit. Flossing is a pivotal part of implant care as it helps remove food remnants stuck between your teeth. If left behind, these particles cause plaque and tartar that may lead to oral hygiene issues.

Avoid Abrasive Products

When buying any oral hygiene products, such as toothpaste or mouthwash, make sure to stick to sensitive teeth products. Using abrasive oral hygiene products after getting implants can cause considerable discomfort in your mouth.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

A dental implant helps your jaw regain its strength to chew. However, it is best to avoid eating certain foods that can damage your implants. Hard and sticky foods such as caramel, hard candies, carrots, steak, and apples, can not only cause serious damage to your implants, but also to your opposing teeth. Even though these foods aren’t prohibited, it is preferable you avoid consuming them.

Avoid Drinking and Smoking

Drinking and smoking have a negative impact on your overall health, including your dental health. When you get implants, it becomes particularly important to avoid these substances. Dental implants take at least six month to completely heal, and smoking and drinking has been linked to slowing down the process further.

Schedule Regular Visits to the Dentist

Dental implants do a great job at improving the overall appearance and functionality of your smile. However, it is important to know that they are a treatment to replace your lost teeth, not a cure for all of your dental hygiene issues. You should continue your regular dental visits at least twice a year even after getting implants. This will help ensure that your implants last a lifetime.
