While enamel is the strongest material in your body, that does not mean that your teeth are not vulnerable to breaking or becoming dislodged from your mouth. What Type of Mouthguard Will Benefit Me?
Depending on what your primary concern is, you may benefit from a custom fitted mouthguard at our office. Mouthguards serve several areas, helping with tooth grinding (bruxism), snoring, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), and for athletes who engage in impact sports.
When your soft tissue vibrates in your sleep, you may be making an awful ruckus that might be keeping your partner up at night. Snoring not only affects you and your health, but it also can be problematic for those who have to listen to it. If your snoring is caused by sleep apnea, we can help treat it for you. A mouthguard can push your jaw forward and prevent your snoring, which can make it to where you do not have to sleep on the couch!
Sports mouthguards are great for preventing injury or loss of your tooth. Impacts during sports such as football or hockey can cause a tooth to become dislodged or shattered. It can also prevent cuts and lacerations inside your mouth if your teeth scrape or bump against your lip and cheek. They can also aid in preventing concussions.
If you grind your teeth at night, a mouthguard can also benefit you by protecting your teeth from rubbing or clenching at night. The mouthguard acts as a buffer from your top and bottom teeth and can help prevent erosion of your enamel, headaches, and tooth pain.
There are three main types of mouthguards that you can buy. These include stock, boil and bite, and custom-fitted mouthguards. Stock mouthguards are the type you can pick up at any big-box or sporting goods store, but they are bulky and cumbersome and don’t provide very good protection. Boil and bite mouthguards are slightly better because they require you to soften the mouthguard then bite it while it’s still soft, giving you a slightly customized fit, but again, they are inferior to custom-made mouthguards.
A custom-made mouthguard is made in our office and conforms perfectly to the shape and contour of your mouth. They’ll deliver the best comfort and fit as well as the best protection against sports injuries or bruxism. We’ll start by making an impression of your teeth, then casting your mouthguard from it. While it may take a couple of appointments to get your fit just right, it’ll be worth it for the superior protection it provides.
