Are You a Good Candidate for a Dental Implant Procedure?

Ideal candidates for dental implants should be in good oral and general health. Besides, your jawbone should be adequate to support the implants.

How Implants Prevent Bone Loss

As you bite down or chew, you put pressure on your jawbone. By continually pressing on the bone, you stimulate it and this keeps it strong and healthy. However, if you lose teeth, your jawbone won’t be stimulated enough. Consequently, it'll gradually be reabsorbed into the body and thus weaken. While you can use bridges and dentures to replace lost teeth, these two sit on top of your gums and thus don’t stimulate the bone. This means they do not prevent bone loss. Conversely, dental implants are placed in the bone and thus function like natural teeth whenever you bite down or chew. Therefore, implants can continually stimulate your jawbone and prevent bone loss.

What is the Process of Getting Dental Implants?

Before the procedure, your dentist will evaluate your oral health and if the jawbone has enough mass and density to hold the implant rod which will serve as the root. If your jawbone isn’t robust enough, your dentist can build it up through bone grafting. The dentist will then place the rod in the jawbone and in several months it will fuse with the bone, through osseointegration. Your dentist will then attach a dental crown to the abutment anchored into the rod. You can then use the implant like a natural tooth. Once you start using the new teeth, the bone will be stimulated and thus strengthened.

What are All-On-6 Implants?

All-on-6 dental implants or full dental implants are dental prostheses that are attached to the mandible or jawbone by six implants. The implants are evenly placed along the jaw. Full dental implants consist of an arch with artificial gums and dentures on top that are anchored to six implants that are placed in the jaw. The advantage of full dental implants is that they can be placed even if your jawbone has low volume, and they’re designed for individuals who have either partial or full tooth loss in both or one jaw.

A full dental implant is permanent and fixed and thus eliminates the need for adhesives and it doesn’t shift or deteriorate over time. All-on-6 implants prevent the bone loss that occurs in the jawbone due to lack of tooth roots. The full denture also looks natural and will enable you to chew easily and efficiently. The longer you take to replace your missing teeth, the more bone loss increases. By getting a dental implant, you can restore all of your teeth and improve the structure of your jawbone.
