Aesthetic Gum Lift
West Linn, OR

Your smile is often the very first thing that others notice about you. When thinking about the perfect smile, focus often falls on the condition of the teeth. While your teeth are an integral component, they are not the only one. Even if your teeth are perfectly straight and bright white, excess gum tissue can drag down the appearance of your smile, leaving you feeling self-conscious. ZenTech Dentistry can help you to achieve the smile you have always dreamed of with an aesthetic gum lift.

What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

No matter how perfect your teeth are, even the smallest bit of excess gum tissue can have a major impact on the quality of your smile. An aesthetic gum lift, also called a crown lengthening, is a Cosmetic Dentistry procedure designed to remove excess tissue to improve the quality of your smile. In some cases, the procedure may also require the removal of a small amount of bone to obtain optimal results.

Performing Your Aesthetic Gum Lift

An aesthetic gum lift is performed under a local anesthetic. The tissue is removed using a dental laser. This tool, an alternative to the traditional scalpel, uses a very thin, concentrated beam of light that is approximately the thickness of a human hair to cut and cauterize tissue. Because the laser cauterizes as the tissue is cut, bleeding is greatly reduced. Another major benefit of the laser is that it is incredibly accurate, enabling us to target only the necessary tissue while also reducing tissue trauma.

After your local anesthetic is administered, small incisions are made in the gums to separate the soft tissue from your teeth. We use the laser to remove the excess tissue from the affected teeth. If necessary, the wavelength of the laser is adjusted so that we can remove bone tissue. Once finished, your gums are sutured back against your teeth.

Benefits of an Aesthetic Gum Lift

An aesthetic gum lift provides many benefits:
•  Treatment is non-surgical and minimally invasive. Only a local anesthetic is needed to help ensure your comfort.
•  Results are noticeable right away.
•  Eliminating excess gum tissues greatly improves the quality of your smile. This can then help to boost your confidence.

Functional Purposes of a Gum Lift

While generally used as a cosmetic procedure, a gum lift also has a few functional purposes as well. Functional uses for a gum lift include:
•  Cavity treatment. Eliminating excess gum tissue ensures that we can effectively treat a cavity at the gum line, removing all of the decay from the cavity and filling it.
•  Crown placement. Crowns are used to treat damaged teeth, restoring their health and improving their strength. To achieve these goals, the crown has to sit properly over the tooth. Removing excess gum tissue around a damaged tooth ensures that your crown will fit properly and provide you with the best results.
•  Improving your periodontal health. Excess tissue can trap bacteria, which increases your risk for periodontal disease. Eliminating this excess tissue eliminates hiding places and helps to make your mouth easier to keep clean, improving your periodontal and your oral health.
