Dental implants are an amazing option for many patients, giving them a permanent and natural restoration to their smile. Unlike conventional dentures, which can be prone to slipping, speech impediments, abrasions, and bone loss, dental implants can help prevent these issues from occurring. However, not all of our patients are good candidates for conventional dental implants and often come to us seeking viable alternatives. To those patients who cannot get conventional dental implants, we here at ZenTech Dentistry are proud to offer immediate load dental implants for dentures as an option for them.
What are the Advantages of Immediate Load Dental Implants?
Many patients are familiar with conventional dentures, but often shy away from considering them and for a good reason! Conventional dentures are not permanent and can be uncomfortable and unnatural looking, so despite their lower cost, they are regarded as unfortunately inferior choices. On the other hand, dental implants are a fantastic option for patients looking for a long-lasting and attractive option for replacing their missing teeth. Despite all of the advantages of dental implants, though, not all of our patients are good candidates for this procedure.
Conventional dental implants start with a titanium screw that is surgically placed directly into the jawbone, underneath the gums. This screw attaches to a post, also known as an abutment, that then attaches to the crown (the “restoration” or the “prosthesis”). Dental implants have an incredible success rate, up to 99 percent, when properly maintained with good oral hygiene and regular dental appointments. Unfortunately, for some of our patients, they cannot get conventional dental implants due to pre-existing contraindications (problems that can cause issues), such as excessive bone loss.
For the patients who cannot get conventional dental implants and do not want dentures, we offer immediate load dental implants for dentures. This procedure often involves placing the implant the same day of the extraction and does not require bone grafting. This can reduce wait time for completing the procedure (which can take up to a year from start to finish). In some cases, we can place the restoration in as little as 48 hours following the dental extraction, though it may take up to 20 days to place the crown. This is often a highly successful procedure, with a nearly 100 percent success rate for many of our patients.
Key considerations include the patient’s health and lifestyle and compliance. If you smoke, stop immediately. If you have pre-existing health conditions such as periodontal disease or immune disorders, we may need to address them first. However, the immediate load does reduce the need for multiple surgeries and can restore your smile in just a short amount of time. It can also help prevent gum and bone loss. Unlike dentures, which can slip and may need relining, later on, these are permanent and can help prevent pain and discomfort when chewing and eating. All in all, these are a fantastic option for patients who do not want to delay improving their smile!
