Your Oral Health Could Decline from Asthma Medication

Posted on 9/25/2019 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Your Oral Health Could Decline from Asthma MedicationThere have been multiple studies on the relationship between asthma and oral health issues. There are many ways that asthma affects your mouth and teeth. With the rise of breathing issues across the United States, more and more people are using inhalers for their asthma. Our office is dedicated to educating you on the most effective way you can combat these side effects and keep your mouth free and clear.

The Trouble with Asthma Inhalers on Your Oral Health

If you use an inhaler, it's recommended you request one with a spacer device so it will limit the amount of medication being deposited on your teeth. There are many issues orally that can arise with asthma inhalers, like gingivitis, periodontitis, and even changes in taste. Through these studies, they also found a majority of the medication that comes from an inhaler is retained in your mouth.

This is usually noticed by having a dry mouth. The medications alter the release of saliva. In rare cases, there were lesions on the tongue and patients would feel tenderness or burning. Another common side effect of an asthma inhaler, is it can cause what's called halitosis, which is bad breath, due to the medicine deposits staying in your mouth. Do not brush your teeth immediately following the use of the inhaler has it has been shown that it can remove that enamel.

Preventative Strategies When Using an Inhaler

If you use an inhaler, there are some preventative strategies to combat the side effects. Like mentioned above, let your physician know you want an inhaler that has the spacer on it. When using your inhaler, it is helpful to space out your use of it, allowing the leftover pieces in your mouth to evaporate. This way you get more of the medication into your lungs. Do your regular oral hygiene of brushing twice a day, flossing, and use a good mouthwash with fluoride.

Since chronic respiratory diseases is rising, our office is here to help you maintain a healthy mouth. Our office would be happy to do your checkups and cleanings. It is recommended you get your teeth cleaned twice per year. Give us a call and we can get you scheduled as soon as you are available and keep those teeth healthy.
