Why Do You Need to Change Your Toothbrush Every Three Months?
Posted on 7/26/2021 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
How long have you been using your current toothbrush? If you cannot remember the last time you replaced it or if you know it has been over three months; it is time for a new one. We recommend that you use a toothbrush for, at most, three months. There may be times when you need to change your toothbrush more frequently, such as if you have been sick with a contagious disease and want to make certain you do not share those germs.
Toothbrushes Do Wear Out
While you may not be able to see any damage to your toothbrush, over time, it does occur. Toothbrush bristles start to wear down, especially if you are brushing two or three times a day as you should be. Both manual and electric toothbrushes start to show significant wear around the three-month mark, which is why you should replace them about this time.
Old Toothbrushes Are Not as Effective
Worn-down bristles simply are not as effective at removing plaque. This means your older toothbrush is not doing a good job at protecting your teeth from cavities. It does not matter how much toothpaste you are using if your brush is not able to scrub down every part of your tooth and effectively remove bacteria. These worn bristles are also more likely to cause your gums to bleed, especially if you have gingivitis.
Old Toothbrushes Can Hold Bacteria
Another issue with older toothbrushes is that they are likely to contain bacteria and even fungal growth. The longer you use a toothbrush, the more likely it is that bacteria will get into the bristles and stay there. Even if you rinse out your toothbrush after every use, it can happen. This means that using an older toothbrush can allow these bacteria the chance to get back into your mouth.
