Two Common Causes for Dental Implant Failure and How to Prevent Them

Two Common Causes for Dental Implant Failure and How to Prevent ThemDental implants are an effective and reliable method for replacing damaged or missing teeth. Typically, implants have a high success rate as 95% of them are still functional after 10 years of installation. That said, there are still a few implants that do not last as long as they should. Here are two common causes for dental implant failure and how to prevent them.

Implant Over-Stressing Because of Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding is a condition in which a person involuntarily rubs their teeth against each other with excessive force. It typically occurs during sleep. Thus, the high biting force begins to damage dental implants and other natural teeth as well.

Teeth grinding can become a dangerous problem for anyone over time, so it is best to reduce its effects with a biteguard. This bite guard is made to fit each person and is worn inside the mouth. It prevents your teeth from solid contact with each other when grinding your teeth, protecting them in the process.

A Periodontal Disease Known As Peri-Implantitis

Peri-implantitis is a periodontal (gum) disease that can cause a bacterial infection in the gums around the dental implants. A thin bacterial film called dental plaque causes this gum disease, and peri-implantitis affects implants more than natural teeth. This is because the gums around implants do not have a collagen barrier to protect them from infection. If left untreated, this gum disease infects the supporting bone, weakening the connection between it and the implant.

Following appropriate oral hygiene practices, such as brushing at least a day and flossing once, can reduce the chances of peri-implantitis.
