Oral health problems have a variety of symptoms. Fortunately, most of the telltale signs of current or impending problems are either highly visible or highly noticeable. Crooked teeth are a warning sign of severe mouth problems if the teeth are not realigned. Patients with crooked teeth should contact our office to prevent long-term damage to their mouths.
Ignoring Crooked Teeth Make the Problem Worse
When crooked teeth are too close to each other, cleaning between the teeth is more difficult and less effective. This allows harmful bacteria to grow, increasing the chances of cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. Crooked teeth are also less effective for chewing food, which can lead to indigestion or choking hazards. Misaligned teeth can cause increased wear and tear on the teeth, mouth, and jaw, causing problems including headaches, jaw pain, and tooth sensitivity. Speaking can be more complicated with crooked teeth as well. And the aesthetics associated with crooked teeth can impact the patient's confidence.
Correcting Crooked Teeth
A common way to realign crooked teeth is by placing braces – either traditional or lingual – in the patient's mouth. Braces are effective at fixing a variety of issues such as teeth alignment and malocclusions. Removable devices such as retainers or invisible aligners can address minor cases of crooked teeth. Severe instances of crooked teeth may require oral surgery to properly fix.
A common truth with oral health issues is that ignoring them makes them worse and increases the time and cost of fixing the problems. Crooked teeth may seem innocuous for patients who are not in pain or faced with difficulties with everyday functions such as speaking or chewing. Our team strongly recommends that patients with crooked teeth schedule a dental exam so we can detect potential complications and provide treatment plans to realign the teeth.
