Brushing is essential in maintaining healthy teeth and gums; with consistent brushing of your teeth, you can prevent bacteria and mouth infections. Our professionals advise that you should brush and floss at least twice in a day, to reduce your chances of contracting oral infections. There are various red lights to poor brushing, but with improved oral hygiene, you can easily prevent them.
Indicators of Inadequate Brushing
Presence of plaque or tartar on your teeth is one indicator that you need to brush your teeth more often because taking a lot of carbohydrates provides a breeding ground for oral bacteria, which causes plaque. Bleeding gums and gum inflammation may also be a sign of inadequate brushing since the acid in the mouth may settle on the gum and cause irritation; hence, infecting the gum. Poor brushing may also cause bad breath due to the accumulation of bacteria and plaque in the mouth. When the mouth contains oral bacteria, the enamel wears out, causing tooth decay.
How to Improve Your Brushing
There are better ways to brush and prevent your mouth from oral infections. First, ensure you use a clean brush and the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, to gently and thoroughly brush your teeth (both upper and lower jaw). Also, carefully brush your gums and gum-line to eliminate any accumulation of plaque and bacteria, then gently brush your tongue to help keep your mouth fresh. Thoroughly clean between your teeth using dental floss to remove hidden plaque and food particles then rinse your mouth. For our patients who suffer from conditions such as arthritis or have problems with brushing, we advocate for the use of an electric toothbrush instead. For exemplary results, you should brush at least twice a day and remember to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. Contact our offices for more information on the best way to brush your teeth.
