How Our Whitening is Superior to Over the Counter Options

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
How Our Whitening is Superior to Over the Counter OptionsProfessional teeth whitening in our office is a superior option when it comes to brightening your smile. While there are over-the-counter remedies, such as toothpaste, mouthwashes, and strips, they are not as effective as our treatments. They are only good at keeping your teeth white, rather than whitening them.

Why a Professional Whitening Works Better

Over-the-counter whitening treatments contain low levels of peroxide using either a calcium peroxide, carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, or sodium perborate. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Dental Association (ADA) have fought and won to limit the percentage of legal bleaching agents allowed in over-the-counter products to avoid people burning and harming themselves with the product. Our office can use much higher strengths of peroxide since we are trained in how to properly maintain and use them.

Our staff can do several treatments to get your teeth whitened to your exact specification. Meanwhile, over-the-counter options can only improve the brightness of your teeth by one or two shades typically. This is a huge variance, especially if you suffer from moderate-to-severe discoloration. You will likely not get the results you want from over-the-counter treatments, while our staff can give you an almost exact match to the shade you want.

In-Office or Home Treatment Kit

We offer both an in-office treatment, which can take up to an hour to complete. It is instantaneous with the results you want once you leave our office. However, we do also offer home treatment kits that you can take home with you if you do not have the time to sit down for in-office whitening treatments. We will do a small consult with you to determine what shade you want to go to and make the kit in-office for you. We will send you home with instructions on how to use them. Though, your results will take several days or weeks to accomplish with a home kit. If you are interested in either an in-office visit or a home kit to whiten your teeth, contact our office today.
