What is the Point of Trimming Prior to Veneers?

What is the Point of Trimming Prior to Veneers?Dental veneers are an effective way to get the beautiful smile of your dreams. Dental veneers consist of thin shells of porcelain material that slip over your natural teeth. However, to give them enough room to fit properly and to look natural, a small portion of the enamel of your teeth will need to be trimmed first. Dental veneers don't require much space, but this step is still important to get a proper fit.

How Much Tooth Structure is Removed?

Fortunately, if you are worried about trimming your teeth, you should know that not much is actually trimmed. In fact, only about 0.5-1.0mm is taken off, although the exact amount will depend on the condition of your natural teeth and your bite. If you struggle with dental anxiety or sensitivity, a local anesthetic or sedation dentistry treatment can be used to help you stay comfortable throughout the process.

What Else Happens During the Preparation Process?
Once your teeth have been properly prepared for the veneers, it is time to take impressions of them. This creates a model that will be used to create the veneers. Lab technicians use the mold to fabricate customized veneers that will fit your unique teeth. A shade guide is also used to choose the perfect color of porcelain that will resemble the natural shade of your teeth.

How Are the Veneers Placed?

About two weeks later, your veneers will be placed. We fashion each veneer to match the size and shade of your teeth in order to create the most realistic results. If you are wearing temporary veneers, they'll be removed at this time, and your new veneers will be placed on the teeth to ensure they fit properly. Any adjustments necessary are made before the veneers are bonded into place.
