How do I select an appropriate dental insurance plan? From a dentist's perspective

I feel that insurance is a great benefit to have, because it will help minimize tooth loss if you maintain your periodic exams and cleanings. The preventative care aspect of most dental plans encourages visits to your dentist on a regular basis. Please keep in mind that there are pros and cons to each dental insurance program, therefore review your plan to make sure it meets your needs. We would be happy to review it for you and choose one that is right for you. As an employer, some of the most important criteria when selecting a plan should be:
1. Will my employees continue care with their existing family dentist and/or have the freedom to select a new dentist of their choosing? 2. Will my employees have the best coverage and access to care under this insurance program?
I would not feel comfortable if my insurance didn’t allow me to see someone I chose through a referral. From a dentist’s perspective it’s always a great way to meet new patients. Referrals continually encourage me to continue my commitment of staying current and provide the best care possible for all my patients. When these criteria are fully satisfied by the insurance program, we all benefit. I feel all licensed dentists are qualified, and if you like your dentist then try to stay for the long term since he or she knows more about you then a new person would starting from the initial examination.
If you feel he or she is not listening and you have tried to communicate your message then it may be time to move on. You shouldn’t feel that you can’t choose someone else just because your insurance company dictates specific options; usually that just leads to lack of care because you won’t go to the dentist to have routine care and you’re paying for those premiums one way or another. A great healthy smile leads to a better sense of wellbeing and the confidence to be a productive individual in society.
