Managing the Pain of Cavities Until You See a Dentist

Posted on 12/16/2024 by Zentech Dentistry
Patient speaking with dentist at ZenTech Dentistry in West Linn, ORToothaches and sensitivity are never pleasant, but they can be especially frustrating when caused by cavities. Cavities are small holes in your teeth that can cause pain, discomfort, and even infection. While the best way to treat a cavity is to see a dentist for a filling or other restoration, there are some things you can do at home to manage the pain until you can get an appointment.

What You Can Do at Home

•  Over-the-counter pain relievers: Medications like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help reduce pain and inflammation. Follow the dosage instructions on the label and be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
•  Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help numb the pain and reduce swelling. Wrap a washcloth or ice pack in a towel and apply it to your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time.
•  Saltwater rinse: A warm saltwater rinse can help clean the area around the cavity and reduce inflammation. Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth for 30 seconds.
•  Clove oil: Clove oil has natural anesthetic properties that can help numb the pain. Apply a small amount of clove oil to a cotton ball and place it on the affected tooth.

What to Avoid

•  Heat: Avoid using heat on the affected area, as this can worsen inflammation and pain.
•  Sugary foods and drinks: Sugar can irritate the cavity and make the pain worse.
•  Hard foods: Hard foods can put pressure on the cavity and cause pain. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes until you can see a dentist.

When to See a Dentist

If you have a toothache that doesn't improve within a few days, or if you have any of the following symptoms, it's important to see a dentist right away:

•  Fever
•  Swelling of the face or mouth
•  Difficulty swallowing
•  Pus draining from the tooth
•  A broken or chipped tooth

Conclusion

Cavities are a common problem, but they can be painful and inconvenient. By following the tips above, you can manage the pain of cavities until you can see a dentist. Remember, the best way to prevent cavities is to practice good oral care, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Restoration Dentistry

If you do have a cavity, your dentist will need to perform a restoration procedure to repair the damage. This may involve placing a filling, crown, or other type of restoration. Restoration dentistry can help to restore the function and appearance of your teeth, and it can also help to prevent further decay.

By taking care of your teeth and seeing your dentist regularly, you can keep your smile healthy and cavity-free.
