The Damage Aspirin Can Do to Your Gums

While aspirin is a common and effective pain reliever, it's important to be aware of its potential side effects, especially when it comes to your oral health.

One of the lesser-known side effects of aspirin is its impact on your gums. Aspirin can thin your blood, which can increase your risk of bleeding. This is especially true after dental procedures, such as tooth extractions or deep cleanings.

Even taking a small dose of aspirin before a dental procedure can increase your risk of bleeding afterwards. For example, if you take one 325mg aspirin tablet before a tooth extraction, you could experience increased bleeding for up to 8 hours after the procedure. This can be a significant problem, as it can lead to complications and slow down the healing process.

How Aspirin Affects Your Gums

Aspirin can affect your gums in a few different ways:

•  Increased bleeding: As mentioned, aspirin thins your blood, which can make your gums bleed more easily. This is a particular concern after dental procedures, such as tooth extractions or deep cleanings.
•  Gum irritation: Aspirin can also irritate your gums, leading to pain, swelling, and redness. In some cases, it can even cause ulcers to develop on your gums.
•  Delayed healing: Aspirin can slow down the healing process after dental procedures. This is because it can interfere with the formation of blood clots, which are essential for healing.

What You Can Do

If you are taking aspirin regularly, it is important to talk to your dentist about the potential risks to your oral health. They can advise you on how to minimize these risks, such as by avoiding aspirin before dental procedures.

There are also a number of things you can do at home to protect your gums:

•  Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings: This will help to keep your gums healthy and prevent problems from developing.
•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: This will help to avoid irritating your gums.
•  Avoid using tobacco products: Tobacco use can increase your risk of gum disease.

Remember

Aspirin can be a valuable tool for managing pain, but it's important to be aware of the potential side effects, especially when it comes to your oral health. By talking to your dentist and taking steps to protect your gums, you can minimize the risks and keep your smile healthy.
