What Complications Can Occur with Dental Implant Placements?

Posted on 6/3/2024 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda

The patient may encounter the following issues if complications arise during dental implant placements:

Sinus Damage

When dental implants are inserted, particularly in the upper jaw, sinus damage is a potential side effect. Since the sinus cavities are located near the upper jawbone, they can be punctured or pressed upon by poorly positioned implants; also, placing dental implants can result in sinus injury in the upper jaw. Chronic sinus infections and other symptoms like pressure and pain can result from damage to the sinuses. Even though sinus injury may not create symptoms immediately, it can lead to severe discomfort and consequences over time.

Infection

These infections, sometimes called peri-implantitis, are mainly caused by germs before, during, or after dental implant surgery. They develop in the area surrounding the implant placement site. Infections in dental implant patients can be exacerbated by poor oral hygiene, smoking, and pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes.

Swelling, redness, pain at the dental implant site, and occasionally pus discharge are signs and symptoms of a dental implant infection. Infections may cause bone loss surrounding the dental implant if not treated quickly, endangering its stability and perhaps necessitating its removal.

Nerve Injury

When dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone, nerve injury is a severe risk, especially if the implant is too near a jaw nerve. Due to the dental implant post being placed close to the nerve, the chin, lips, gums, or entire face may experience tingling, discomfort, or numbness. For certain patients, these nerve damage symptoms may be temporary; nevertheless, they may develop into a chronic problem for others. To prevent such unfavorable consequences, dental implant placement must be planned precisely.
