Is It OK to Smoke Following Teeth Extraction?Cigarette smoking is extremely harmful to your health. That is something we are all aware of. But did you know that smoking cigarettes after having your teeth extracted can be just as harmful, if not worse? Continue reading to learn about the dangers and how to avoid them.

Risks of Smoking After Tooth Extraction

It is generally not suggested to smoke after having a tooth extracted. This is due to the fact that smoking might slow the healing process and raise the risk of problems. The development of a dry socket is one of the most serious dangers of smoking after having a tooth pulled. It happens when a blood clot forms at the extraction site and becomes dislodged, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. Without blood clot protection, patients are in danger of infection, extreme pain, and lengthy healing. Also, smoking increases the risk of getting an abscess, which is a pocket of pus that grows around the extraction site. Abscesses can be extremely painful and may require antibiotics or surgery to treat. Therefore, it is best to avoid smoking for at least a week after having a tooth extracted.

How to Care After Getting Tooth Extracted?

After having a tooth extracted, caring for your mouth is essential to promote healing and avoid complications. The first 24 hours after the procedure are typically the most uncomfortable, so taking things easy and avoiding strenuous activity is essential. You may also experience some bleeding and swelling, which can be controlled by placing a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. It is also essential to keep the extraction site clean, which can be done by gently rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater. Finally, eat soft foods and avoid using straws, as they can cause bleeding. Following these useful guidelines can help ensure a smooth recovery following a tooth extraction.
