Can Teeth Whitening Damage Teeth?

Posted on 5/22/2023 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Can Teeth Whitening Damage Teeth? No one can underscore the power of extremely white teeth. They are gorgeous and enhance one's smile. That is why we all want to have brighter teeth. Teeth whitening is a procedure that is done at a dental office. The question everyone asks is whether it is safe for our teeth. The short answer is yes, whitening is safe for your teeth, nonetheless, it could have a few short-term side effects.

What Happens During and After Whitening?

After the procedure, the tooth becomes dehydrated and dried out. The whitening substance has an active ingredient that goes through the tooth enamel up to the dentin, the second layer of your teeth. While there, it starts working by reversing the staining and discoloration. This process essentially bleaches dentin.

Once the dentist is through with the procedure, they leave the teeth to rehydrate. Often, no special medicines are used to rehydrate your teeth but your saliva. One concern, though, is to refrain from stain-enhancing foods and drinks when the teeth are still rehydrating.

Leave Tooth Whitening Procedure to the Dentist

It is possible to whiten teeth at home with over-the-counter products. Many drugstore products such as rinses, toothpaste, and whitening strips are used for at-home whitening, however, they may not deliver the results you want. Therefore, visiting a dentist first for the procedure can never be understated, it is safest.

In-office whitening just like other whitening methods should only be done on healthy teeth. Even so, before the dentist starts the process, a dental exam and professional cleaning have to be carried out first. If our dentist finds out that no underlying dental issues could affect your gums and teeth or even the whitening procedure, then the process of whitening the teeth will continue.
